Makins hats are "handmade", one at a time in their factory in New York city. They began production in 1974 using a jiffy steamer,and molded the raw hat bodies over wood blocks. The hats were then baked and dried in a home oven. Now more than 35 years later, they are in their 3rd New York City factory. They still make all their hats by hand, one at a time, using steam to mold the straw and felt bodies over the wood blocks. Makins take great pride in making the finest hats available. Brad Pitt personally requested Makins hats for the 60 page shoot and cover of the July 2007 issue of W magazine that he first shot with Angelina Jolie.
